In this phase of the painting I have begun to lay washes and dry brushed strokes using my flat sables with my yellows, umbers, greens and blues, and mars black. I used a toothbrush and very wet white and black paints to stipple the rocks with a splattered texture. I had to take great care to cover the rocks above with my hand and pieces of paper masks to prevent splattering the rest of the piece. I could have also used my airbrush for this with extremely low air pressure, but I find the toothbrush to be a bit more fun, which to me is what painting is really all about, having fun, making marks on a surface, and expressing how you feel about what you have experienced.
