At this stage I have done a lot of brush work on the landscape in the background. I set up a combination of permanent green light and pthalocyanine green for the trees and shrubs, starting first with dark tones and then putting the lighter tones on top. I used a great deal of dry brush work on the cliff to simulate the texture of the rocks after setting up smooth base coats with a variety of colors. The boat was hand painted by brush as were the swirling currents in the water and then airbrushed over. I continued to do layers of airbrush and paintbrush until the desired effect was attained. I also began work on the middle ground on the American side of the falls all in paintbrush.
