This work of art is part of my "Serenity Series", based on my trip to Niagara Falls and Nova Scotia during the summer of 2005. You can click on the thumbnails below to see how the piece was made. I started first with a very detailed drawing on canvas and did layers of airbrush and paintbrush to achieve the results you see below. I took the original photos for the painting from the tower on the American side of Niagara Falls. Even though the falls is incredibly powerful and provides electricity to Canada and New York from the power plant (the object in the background that looks like a train), I found it very peaceful and relaxing in its power and beauty. It seemed that no matter where I stood, there was a constant rainbow from the mist rising from the falls.
I will also be painting some views from the Canadian side. I first went to the falls when I was a child with my parents and later, after studying the art works of Fredric Edwin Church, I had to return as an adult to experience it for myself as an artist. I was especially amazed at how Church had captured the power and beauty of this wonder of the world in his original oil paintings and have tried to capture that myself in my own style. I sincerely hope you all enjoy the view!
