I created this painting in response to the BP oil spill in the gulf. When I saw the pelicans, dolphins, turtles and other animals covered in oil, I just had to do a painting about that event. The wave itself is made up of tiny little lightning bolts to symbolize the power that oil has over us. The turtles remained mostly black because they were to a great extent, covered in that toxic goo, but they are rising upwards as a sign that help was on the way and they would be relocated to distant, safer shores. While the gulf remained beautiful, deep below the surface, the dark oil remains as the dolphins attempt to leap out of it to freedom.
